How to use this page
Find the exact sentence the interface showed you. Every entry says what it means, whether anything was changed, and what to do. The sentences are quoted exactly as the English interface writes them; the Spanish interface has its own, listed in the Spanish edition of this page.
The service or the provider cannot be reached
| Message | Meaning | Changed? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| "Accounts is not answering right now. Nothing was changed." with Try again | The Accounts service could not be reached. The interface shows no sign-in form in this state, because a form could not work | No | Choose Try again later. Do not retype your password elsewhere |
| "Accounts could not be reached. Check your connection and try again." | The request never reached the service | No | Check your connection, then repeat the action |
| "The identity provider is not answering. Nobody can sign in until it does." | Sign-in is configured and the provider is down | No | Wait. Your account is not affected |
| "No sign-in method is configured here yet." | The installation has no identity provider, or the method you used is not enabled | No | Only the people who run the installation can configure one |
| "{provider} is not available here." | That method is not offered by this installation | No | Use another method you have attached |
Signing in, confirming and recovering
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Your session expired. Sign in to continue." right after Sign in with email | The address and password were not accepted. The current interface uses the expired-session sentence for this refusal; a recorded screen shows it. The answer is the same for an unknown address and a wrong password, so nobody can find out who has an account | Check the address; recover access |
| "Those details did not sign you in." | You came back from GitHub or Google with a refusal | Start the sign-in again and approve the request at the provider |
| "That did not work." | The provider's answer could not be exchanged for a session | Start the sign-in again from the Sign in screen |
| "That link is no longer valid. Sign in to ask for another one." | A confirmation link was used, expired or incomplete | Confirm your email |
| "That link is no longer valid. Ask for another one." | A recovery link was used, expired or incomplete | Ask for a new recovery message |
| "Your session expired. Sign in to continue." on the Confirming your address or Choose a new password screen | The one-time credential of the link was refused by the provider. It means the same as the two rows above | Ask for a new link |
| "Use at least 8 characters." / "The two do not match." | The new password was refused by the form | Correct the fields |
| "Enter a valid email address." / "This is required." | A field is empty or malformed | Correct the field |
An error response with the code DESTINATION_REJECTED instead of a screen |
A link asked Accounts to return you to an address the product never registered | When a return destination is refused |
Your session
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Your session expired. Sign in to continue." | The session reached its end time | Sign in again |
| "Your session ended. Sign in to continue." | The session was ended, here or from elsewhere | Sign in again; see Sessions and signing out |
| "This account cannot sign in. Contact whoever administers it." | The account is suspended. Signing in again changes nothing | Suspension |
Sign-in methods
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "That identity already belongs to another account." | The GitHub or Google identity you tried to add is held by another account. It is refused, never moved, and accounts are never merged by email | Sign in to that other account instead, or remove the method there first |
| "Sign in again to change how you sign in." | Adding or removing a method needs a recent sign-in | Sign out, sign in, repeat |
| "This is the only way into this account, so it cannot be removed. Add another first." | You tried to remove the last method | Add another method first |
Organizations and invitations
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "An organization keeps at least one owner. Make someone else an owner first." | The change would remove the last Owner | Hand over ownership first |
| "You do not have access to this." | Your role does not allow the action, for example an Administrator changing ownership | Ask an Owner |
| "That is not here." | The organization or page does not exist, or you are not a member of it. Accounts never confirms that an organization you cannot see exists | Check the address and that you are signed in with the right account |
| "That invitation is not valid." | Unknown, incomplete, expired, used or withdrawn link | Ask for a new invitation |
| "That invitation has expired. Ask for a new one." | Expired while you were on the screen | Ask for a new one |
| "That invitation was already used or withdrawn." | Closed while you were on the screen | Ask for a new one if it was not you |
| "Sign in with the address this invitation was sent to, confirmed by your provider." | No confirmed sign-in method of your account has the invited address | Accept an invitation |
Saving
| Message | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| "Saved." | The service accepted the change | Nothing |
| "Saved. This page could not be refreshed, so what you see may be out of date." | The change was accepted; only the re-read failed | Reload. Do not repeat the change |
| "Check what you entered." | The service refused a value, for example a name that is too long | Correct it and save again |
| "Something went wrong. Nothing was changed." | An unexpected failure. Nothing was saved | Repeat the action once. If it persists, tell the people who run your installation what you were doing and when |
What Accounts will never ask you to do
No recovery on this page asks you to delete an account, create a second account, share a password or an invitation link in public, or approve a sign-in you did not start. If a message asks for any of those, it did not come from Beyond Accounts.
Next action
If the problem is inside a product and not at sign-in, continue with the product's own recovery page: Delegate recovery. For everything else, the troubleshooting index starts from the symptom.
